What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?

Search Engine Optimisation, or SEO is the process of building, designing and tweaking a website to rank high in the search engines.

This is done to obtain traffic and potential customers through the search engines.

Is SEO important for my website?

SEO is imperative for any website.

The main purpose of a website is to provide information and services to visitors.

If a website does not serve this, then the very purpose of the website is lost.

Since users search for services and information on search engines, SEO is certainly essential for your website.

What is SEM, and how does it differ to SEO?

SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing, or precisely put, it actually incurs cost for obtaining traffic or customers.

SEM is also known as CPC (Cost Per Click) or PPC (Pay Per Click) ads.

CPC platforms are usually provided by the search engines, and are also considered to be a main source of revenue for the major search engines.

Google Adwords is one major form of SEM.

Yahoo & MSN also provide their own advertising platforms, namely Yahoo Search Marketing, and MSN adCenter.

Why doesn’t my website rank well for my niche keywords?

Ranking depends on a lot of factors. It mainly depends on your competition, industry and the type of SEO strategy used.

If you are competing directly with stiff competition, then you will find it hard to gain respectable rankings from the search engines.

However, overly aggressive SEO strategies (also known as spamming) will often lead to de-indexing of your website from the search engine index. This is not a good thing as it is nearly impossible to get back in there, which is website suicide.

How long will it take to rank high in the search engines? Can I gain #1 spot in Google?

Search engines are highly complex in nature, and are powered by algorithms or bots that are designed by the search engine engineers.

These bots usually determine the relevancy of a page, and allocate a rank to the website according to a wide variety of factors.

Ranking depends on the industry, and if the competition is mild, you could aspire for the top spot within a shorter period of time, but if you are in a highly competitive industry, it will take anywhere from 6 months to two years or more to really show the desired results.

Also, no one can guarantee a top spot in any search engine, and if they do, then they are probably lying.

Is Search Engine Optimisation Expensive?

SEO is comparatively cheaper than most common forms of advertising platforms, such as print media, video ads on TV, etc.

Internet is proving to be the fastest growing media in the world, and search engines do play a very, very important role.
