Search Engines Explained:

Who and What Are Search Engines?

Everyone who has ever used the internet before will have used search engines. Even people who have never used the internet know what search engines are.

However not everyone knows what a search engine does, how it works and how they can get the most out of them.

There are more popular search engines which everyone has heard of, including Google, Yahoo, MSN. Then behind those major few are hundreds of other search engines, including such sites as Ask, All the Web, Excite, Lycos plus many, many more.

Everyone has their own favourite search engine which they use most of the time, however a lot of people quite often do use more than 1 search engine.

Search Engines and How They Work:

Search Engines have been around for many years now and are the life blood of the internet, as without them we will not be able to find the things we are looking for, or navigating our way around the ever expanding world wide web.

There are literally billions of websites on the internet at the moment, not to mention billions more web pages.

For example if you type the letter A into Google you will see that there are over 8 billion websites for that search alone.

All of these websites sit on the internet in hyper space - a virtual world if you will.

As there are so many websites out there, there needs to be a way of sorting them out into searchable categories which is what search engines do. You will obviously need your website to be found by search engines (which we will do for you so no need to worry).

If your website cannot be found by search engines then you will not be found by people using the internet and looking for things that you do. Your website's content, i.e. product descriptions, service descriptions, etcetera needs to be read by search engines and put into their databases, otherwise you will miss out.

Regardless of what your website sells or provides, search engines are the best way for potential visitors / customers to find you.

Search engines send out 'robots' or 'spiders' to crawl the internet thousands of times each and every day. These robots or spiders gather information from every website that has been submitted to the internet and updates the search engines database.

The robots follow links on websites to other sites, and from there will follow their links to other sites, and on it goes, continually updating it's own engine's database.

It adds what it finds to its massive database which keeps your information new and fresh for visitors and potential customers. Every time you make a change to your website these robots or spiders will find it.

The search engines then keep all of the websites submitted to it in an enormous database. These websites are now ready to be found by people using the internet.

You find what you are looking for by typing in a word or phrase into the search engine, which in turn will bring back every single website around the world with that word or phrase in it.

Search Engines are Necessary:

So in a nutshell, the internet needs search engines and websites need search engines. Without your website being found by an engine there is no point having a website, unless you do not want to be found...
