Domain Names | What They Are and Do:
Whether you want a business website or a personal website, you will need to purchase a domain name.
If you need the domain name for a business website then you really need to make sure that the name you choose is appropriate for your business
- is memorable for people to remember easily enough - and that the domain name is as short as possible - which again will help people remember the domain name easier.
So for example if your business is selling cars - then pick a name that lets people know what you do, such as www.carsales.co.uk or www.wesellcars.co.uk - it is not a good idea to have domain names that do not reflect the business, so for example a bad domain name for a company selling cars would be - www.fruitsales.co.uk - as this obviously does not give the right impression for your business.
The same is applicable if you want a personal website - make sure you pick the domain name that is ideal for you and this too will need to be easy enough to remember.
For example if your website is going to be about you - then pick a domain name with your name in it. For example www.stevesmith.co.uk or www.katywilson.co.uk.
Of course with both of the above you need to make sure that your domain name is available to purchase - as so many businesses and individuals now have domain names and websites, this can be tricky in some circumstances.
If your ideal domain name has already been taken - there are alternatives.
For example instead of having a .co.uk domain you could have a .com or a .net domain extension - so this would make your website www.carsales.com instead of www.carsale.co.uk

In business the extension can be just as important as the domain name itself.
If you are a UK business - selling only within the UK, then it would be best to have the extension of .co.uk, which will show your customers you are in the UK.
