Don't Panic ...

Two months of negative growth and the country finally knows ‘officially’ what we’ve really known for months – we are in a recession.

At the time of writing the car manufacturers have just received a bail-out that is being sold as anything but, Woolworths has closed its doors for the last time and the only businesses seemingly booming are manufacturers of shutters – well there are certainly plenty of them currently covering shops on our high street, at any rate.

But hang on a second. Isn’t this all getting just a little hysterical?

Europe is also suffering, but the News in Portugal, Italy or Sweden doesn’t start each day with a totaliser flashing today’s job losses in giant red font.

They aren’t being assaulted by gigantic red arrows leaping off their tv screens each night signalling ‘we’re doomed’. Europe doesn’t seem to be taking quite the same level of glee in the downturn that our media is.

Theirs is a more measured response. Things are tough, undoubtedly, but they appear to have rather less in the way of cataclysmic predictions and rather more of the ‘don’t panic’ attitude that surely we could use right now.

Businesses still need to function. Goods and services still need to be traded. Profits may be down but the wheels still turn – or at least they might if the doom-mongers just gave it a rest for a couple of weeks.

From an optimisation perspective the advice is as it ever was: optimisation is what makes your customers see you. Your visitor numbers are a direct result of your optimisation. Cut that optimisation and you’ll disappear from the Web as effectively as if your business has suddenly found Harry Potter’s cloak of invisibility.

As Kipling nearly said: Search Engine Optimisation - if you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs you’ll stay at the forefront of search engine rankings, my son.
